Brazil regulates gaming industry with new legal framework

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has signed a decree regulating the Legal Framework for the Electronic Games Industry in Brazil. This measure officially recognizes video games as interactive audiovisual works and cultural products, granting the sector access to established federal funding mechanisms such as the Rouanet Law and the Audiovisual Law.

Key initiatives announced include the creation of 'Game Brasil,' a public platform designed to catalog and promote national productions, and a R$ 200 million public call from Finep to support startups in the digital solutions and gaming sectors. Additionally, the Ministry of Education will establish undergraduate game development courses at five federal universities, offering 230 vacancies to foster professional qualification.

The regulation also addresses intellectual property by empowering the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (INPI) to implement a more efficient registration system for games. To support development, the decree aims to simplify the importation of essential tools like devkits. Furthermore, the framework includes provisions for the protection of children and adolescents in digital environments, focusing on parental supervision and safety in microtransactions.
