Brazil regulator reviews Starlink request for additional spectrum
Brazil’s telecommunications regulator, Anatel, has opened a 10-day public consultation to review a request from Starlink Brazil Holding to expand its frequency access. The request seeks to add six frequency ranges between 92 GHz and 114.25 GHz to support uplinks from ground stations to satellites.
These frequencies would facilitate the connection between Starlink satellites and gateway stations, which carry residential internet services to customers. The requested spectrum totals 17.85 GHz. Technical staff at Anatel have noted that the request is consistent with current frequency allocations, though the use of such high frequencies presents technical challenges regarding signal propagation and atmospheric conditions.
Anatel is seeking public and industry comments to determine if any specific limits or conditions should be applied to the request to ensure fair market competition and digital sovereignty. A final decision will depend on further technical and regulatory evaluations.
