Brazil reinaugurates Rio Bonito plaza and São Paulo stadium after extensive renovations

The Praça Nelson Ramos de Castro in the Ipê neighborhood of Rio Bonito was reopened on June 1, 2026 after a year‑long renovation. The revamped space now includes a new sand court for beach volleyball, a senior‑focused fitness area, a playground and a refreshed multi‑sport court. Mayor Marcos Abrahão highlighted the project’s aim to promote sports among children and the elderly, and local residents expressed enthusiasm for the new facilities.

In São Paulo, the Ícaro de Castro Mello stadium in Ibirapuera was relaunched by Governor Tarcísio de Freitas after a two‑year, R$ 90 million overhaul. The upgrades feature a nine‑lane athletics track – the only one of its kind in Latin America – improved stands, a warm‑up track and added seating for over 12,000 spectators. Although some work remains unfinished, the venue will host the Troféu Brasil de Atletismo at the end of July, attracting athletes such as Olympic medalists Caio Bonfim and Alison dos Santos.
