Brazil infrastructure: Major bridge works and funding announced
Various infrastructure projects and bridge works are underway across different Brazilian regions. In Maranhão, the Ministry of Transport and DNIT have finalized an emergency contract worth R$176.7 million to reconstruct the left side of the Estreito dos Mosquitos Bridge on the BR-135 highway. Construction is scheduled to begin on September 10, 2026, following inspections that revealed structural issues such as concrete displacement and corrosion. While work proceeds, the right side of the bridge will remain operational under monitoring.
In Rio Grande do Sul, the federal government has released R$26 million to accelerate the completion of the Guaíba Bridge complex in Porto Alegre. The funds aim to address pending access ramps, a process currently delayed by the need for land expropriation and family resettlement. Additionally, in Taquara, local authorities have completed repairs on a bridge over the Paranhana River that was damaged by recent flooding, implementing a concrete containment wall to stabilize the structure.
In Mogi das Cruzes, construction has commenced on the new Volta Fria Bridge. Supported by a R$21 million investment from the state government, the project aims to improve urban mobility and safety for heavy vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists, with an expected execution period of 12 months.
