Brazil police actions drive surge in armed shootings, report finds
A semiannual report released by the Instituto Fogo Cruzado covering January‑June 2026 examined 57 municipalities in the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Belém and Salvador. It recorded 2,511 shootings, with 2,403 people shot, 1,628 killed and 775 injured. Police actions were responsible for 39 % of the incidents, causing 584 deaths and 317 injuries, and their participation rose from 33 % in 2025 to 39 % in 2026. In Greater Rio police were involved in 47 % of shootings, the highest level since 2017. Victims of armed‑group conflicts increased 12 % from 181 in 2025 to 203 in 2026. In Salvador and its metropolitan area, police accounted for 56 % of shootings and 93 % of massacres, responsible for 94 % of the deaths recorded. Research manager Terine Husek Coelho warned that the three‑decade‑old security model is ineffective and fuels the violence.
