The Institute Fogo Cruzado released a semiannual report covering January–June 2026 in the Brazilian metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Belém and Salvador, encompassing 57 municipalities. The study recorded 2,511 shootings that wounded 2,403 people, of whom 1,628 were killed and 775 injured.

Police actions were linked to 39% of those shootings, resulting in 584 deaths and 317 injuries, and the share of police involvement rose from 33% in the first half of 2025 to 39% in the same period of 2026. In the Greater Rio de Janeiro area, police participated in 47% of incidents, the highest level since 2017. Conflicts between armed groups also grew, with victims increasing 12% from 181 in 2025 to 203 in 2026.

Research manager Terine Husek Coelho criticised the long‑standing security model, calling it ineffective and saying it fuels the high number of shootings, endangers residents and fails to curb the advance of armed groups.
