Municipal Chambers are primary sites of political violence against female councilors
A new report by Rede A Ponte, titled ‘Raio X da Violência Política de Gênero e Raça no Legislativo Municipal’, reveals high levels of political violence against female councilors in Brazil. The study, which surveyed over 70 parliamentarians, found that 77% of these incidents occur within Municipal Chambers.
The research highlights a significant racial disparity: 80% of Black female councilors reported experiencing political violence, compared to 60% of white female councilors. The majority of aggressors—eight out of ten—are identified as white cisgender men. Additionally, 34% of the attacks were committed by colleagues from the same political party, a phenomenon referred to as ‘fogo amigo’.
Types of violence reported include psychological aggression (89%), symbolic violence (82%), and moral violence (59%). Other forms of abuse mentioned include economic, procedural, sexual, and physical violence. Despite the existence of Law 14.192/2021 intended to protect women's political rights, the report suggests that institutional responses remain limited, with only a small fraction of recorded cases resulting in formal legal or party action.
