Brazil dengue vaccination: 3 million adolescents have incomplete schedules

More than 3 million adolescents in Brazil who received the first dose of the dengue vaccine have yet to complete their immunization schedule. The vaccine requires a second dose, administered three months after the first, to ensure full protection.

Eder Gatti, director of the National Immunization Program (PNI), reported that over 11.8 million doses have been administered nationwide, consisting of 7.6 million first doses and 4.2 million second doses. Additionally, nearly 4 million doses distributed to municipalities remain unapplied.

Health authorities warned that dengue cases typically rise during the summer, a trend that may be intensified this season by El Niño. The current vaccination target group includes children and adolescents aged 10 to 14. While the Japanese manufacturer Takeda has production capacity limits, officials stated that supply for the target population is guaranteed through existing contracts.

Separately, the application of the dengue vaccine developed by the Butantan Institute remains suspended following the identification of severe cases among vaccinated individuals.
