Brazil reports decline in Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome cases
According to the latest InfoGripe bulletin from Fiocruz, cases of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SRAG) are declining nationally in Brazil, showing long-term stabilization despite short-term fluctuations. However, several states remain under concern. Maranhão, Pará, Sergipe, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, and Rio Grande do Sul have shown increasing incidence at alert, risk, or high-risk levels.
In the southern region, Paraná has seen a 13.3% decrease in SRAG cases compared to the same period in 2025, moving from an alert status to a security status. In contrast, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul remain at high-risk levels.
Nationally, the increase in cases is concentrated in the 2 to 14 age group, primarily associated with rhinovirus. In Rio Grande do Sul, metapneumovirus is also a contributing factor. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), rhinovirus, and metapneumovirus are identified as the main causes of mortality in young children. Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination, particularly booster doses for the elderly and immunocompromised, and RSV vaccination for pregnant women.
