Suspect in Água Doce Businessman Killing Turns Himself In
A man identified as the primary suspect in the stabbing death of 36‑year‑old businessman Maico Moraes presented voluntarily to the Água Doce Civil Police on 15 June. Accompanied by a lawyer, he was questioned and released pending further investigation because the legal period for a flagrant arrest had expired.
The homicide occurred on 13 June on Avenida Independência after a multi‑person dispute escalated; the victim was struck in the abdomen with a bladed weapon and later pronounced dead despite emergency responders’ efforts. Police and the Institute of General Forensics have been conducting an inquiry, and the suspect remains under judicial oversight while awaiting trial. A funeral on 14 June drew dozens of mourners, including motorcycle and classic‑car enthusiasts, who paid tribute at the municipal cemetery.
Authorities continue to gather evidence, and the case has heightened local concern over public safety in the central area of Água Doce.
