Brazil reports reduction in Amazon deforestation despite recent monthly increase

Deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon has seen significant fluctuations according to data from the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). Between August 2025 and July 2026, the area under deforestation alert reached 2,874 km², a 36% decrease compared to the previous period. This represents the lowest surface area under alert since 2016, reflecting environmental control policies under the administration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

However, recent monthly data shows a 9% increase in deforestation for September compared to the same month in 2025, marking the first September increase since 2022. Despite this monthly rise, the total area lost during the first nine months of the year fell by 26.9% compared to the same period last year.

The Brazilian government aims to eliminate illegal deforestation by 2030. While progress has been made, the region remains a site of tension as sectors such as agribusiness, mining, and oil exploration continue to push for territorial expansion. The Amazon remains a critical strategic territory for global climate regulation and biodiversity.
