Brazil reports significant decline in traffic deaths in São Paulo and Rondonópolis

The State of São Paulo recorded a 10.1% drop in traffic fatalities in May 2026 compared with May 2025, with 544 deaths versus 605 the previous year. Over the January‑May period, total deaths fell 5.6% to 2,389 from 2,531, and all transport modes showed reductions. Automobile deaths fell 15.6% in May and 12.7% year‑to‑date; pedestrian deaths fell 15.2% in May and 1.1% year‑to‑date; bicycle deaths fell 7.9% in May and 19.8% year‑to‑date; and motorcycle deaths fell 7.1% in May and 1.3% year‑to‑date.

In the city of Rondonópolis, Mato Grosso, traffic fatalities decreased 14.8% in the first five months of 2026, with 23 deaths versus 27 in the same period of 2025. Despite the decline, Rondonópolis remains among the municipalities with the highest absolute fatality numbers in the state, ranking fourth after Sinop, Cuiabá and Várzea Grande. State‑wide, Mato Grosso saw a 15.8% increase in traffic deaths, reaching 425 fatalities from January to May 2026, compared with 367 the previous year.
