Brazil demands digital platforms detail gender violence reporting channels

The Brazilian federal government has issued a formal request to digital platforms to provide detailed information regarding their reporting mechanisms for gender-based violence. In a joint official letter, the Secretariats of Digital Policies (Presidency), Digital Rights (Ministry of Justice), and the Secretariat for Confronting Violence against Women (Ministry of Women) requested that companies respond within a suggested 15-day period.

The primary objective is to improve the quality of assistance provided by the Ligue 180 service, specifically by enabling better guidance for women victims of online violence. The government is seeking transparency on several fronts, including the processing of unauthorized disclosures of intimate content, average analysis times for reports, and mechanisms to prevent the re-circulation of removed content.

Additionally, the request seeks clarification on how platforms handle content manipulated or generated by artificial intelligence, as well as the existence of specific channels for reporting harassment and gender-based political violence. Companies are also required to designate a focal point in Brazil to facilitate communication with public authorities.
