Brazil rescues a sea lion and a whale‑calf on coastal beaches

A juvenile South American sea lion (Arctocephalus australis) was found debilitated on Praia do Satélite in Itanhaém, São Paulo, on Sunday. Teams from the Projeto de Monitoramento de Praias da Bacia de Santos, the Instituto Biopesca and other local environmental groups stabilized the animal, transferred it to the Instituto Gremar in Guarujá and will provide full medical rehabilitation.

In Marataízes, Espírito Santo, lifeguards rescued a mother whale and its calf that were swimming close to fishing nets on Praia da Barra. Using a motorized inflatable boat, the team guided the mammals away from the nets and back to open sea, preventing possible entanglement and injury.
