Brazil's antitrust regulator approves American Airlines' stake in Azul

The Superintendence of Brazil's antitrust authority (CADE) issued an unrestricted approval for American Airlines to acquire a minority share of roughly 8% in Azul Linhas Aéreas, representing an investment of about US$100 million (≈ R$510 million). The technical assessment, published on 31 July 2026, concluded that the transaction poses no competition risks for consumers or the market and that the safeguards in place prevent any exchange of competitively sensitive information. CADE noted that the investment will enhance Azul's ability to compete in Brazil's domestic passenger market. The approval is subject to a possible appeal by Abra, the holding company of Gol and Avianca, within 15 days; absent such a challenge, the decision becomes final. United Airlines has already increased its stake in Azul to around 8.6%, so combined holdings of American and United could reach about 17% of Azul. The regulator affirmed that the deal does not diminish rivalry among national and international carriers.
