Brazil's Central Bank IBC‑Br Index Rises 0.1% in May

The Central Bank of Brazil released its monthly Economic Activity Index (IBC‑Br) for May 2026, showing a modest 0.1% rise compared with April after seasonal adjustment. Over the past 12 months the index is up 1.4% and 0.7% on a quarterly basis, indicating a continued but moderate expansion. Sector‑by‑sector, industry grew 0.4%, services 0.1%, while agro‑pecuary fell 1.0%, meaning the broader economy would have risen about 0.2% if not for the drop in agriculture. The IBC‑Br is presented as a “preview of GDP” and is monitored by the Central Bank in setting monetary policy; the current Selic rate stands at 14.25% per year. Analysts noted that the figure met expectations and helped confirm the bank’s outlook for a cautious monetary stance.

The release coincided with market commentary that highlighted the index’s role in gauging the pace of Brazil’s recovery amid high interest rates and external uncertainties.
