Brazil closes major bridges for structural upgrades, causing traffic detours

The Ponte Quinca Mariano bridge, which spans the Rio Paranaíba at the Minas Gerais–Goiás border, will be fully closed for structural rehabilitation starting 15 July. The project, funded with R$ 25.9 million by the Goiás government, is scheduled to last up to 12 months and will involve replacing support elements, upgrading expansion joints, adding post‑tension reinforcement, improving drainage and resurfacing. The closure affects around 15,000 vehicles a day and forces drivers to use alternative routes, adding roughly 74 km to trips between Uberlândia and Caldas Novas.

Separately, the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (DNIT) announced a temporary traffic interruption on Brazil’s BR‑280 between Araquari and Guaramirim on 8–9 July. The shutdown, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., enables the transport and placement of twelve prefabricated bridge beams for a new crossing over the Rio Piraí as part of the BR‑280 duplication project. Motorists are advised to follow signage and plan journeys in advance.

Both projects reflect ongoing investments in Brazil’s road network to improve safety and capacity, while causing short‑term inconveniences for regional traffic.
