Brazil road concessionaires rescue wildlife and expand animal‑protection campaign

The concessionaire SPMAR, which manages the southern and eastern sections of São Paulo’s Rodoanel Mario Covas, has intensified its Fauna Conservation Program with a mobile “Posto Itinerante” located at a local supermarket. Drivers are given educational materials about the dangers of feeding wildlife near the highway, the risk of zoonotic disease transmission, and how such actions increase accident chances. The initiative also visits public facilities in Poá and Suzano and references Brazil’s Federal Law 14.064/20 on animal cruelty.

Meanwhile, the concessionaire Elovias, which operates the BR‑040, rescued a toucan that had been struck by a vehicle. After treatment for ocular hemorrhage and cataract, the bird underwent a rare cataract surgery that restored vision in both eyes. Although not yet ready for release, the toucan will remain under veterinary care and may be transferred to an ICMBio‑approved sanctuary.

Both efforts illustrate ongoing road‑safety and wildlife‑rehabilitation actions by Brazilian highway operators.
