Brazil road safety: High accident rates drive shift to predictive technology

Data from the Brazilian Federal Highway Police (PRF) shows that Brazilian federal highways recorded 72,483 traffic accidents and 6,044 deaths in 2025, averaging over 190 occurrences per day.

In response to these figures, transport companies are shifting from reactive protocols to predictive risk management. Companies like Smart Risk are utilizing telemetry, video, tracking, and artificial intelligence to identify micro-events—such as driver fatigue, distraction, or speeding—before they escalate into major accidents. This approach aims to manage probabilities rather than just responding to completed events.

A study by Grupo Imtraff and the National Road Safety Observatory suggests that targeted investment in low-cost safety devices could prevent over 50,000 deaths and 600,000 injuries, potentially saving R$ 90.3 billion over five years. Current economic data indicates that Brazil loses approximately R$ 50 billion annually due to traffic accidents, impacting the healthcare system, social security, and national productivity.
