Brazil's Santa Catarina to launch free‑flow toll on BR‑153, BR‑282, BR‑480 in 2027
From 2027 Brazil's western Santa Catarina will replace traditional toll plazas on federal highways BR‑153, BR‑282 and BR‑480 with a free‑flow, electronic toll system. Eight gantries will be installed in Joaçaba, Erval Velho, Campos Novos, Concórdia, Água Doce, Irani, Xaxim and Faxinal dos Guedes. Vehicles equipped with an electronic tag will have the fee deducted automatically, while others will be identified by license‑plate cameras and billed later. The charge will be calculated proportionally to the distance travelled and will be 50 % of the contracted rate during the first twelve months. No discounts are offered to local residents or frequent users. The project is backed by roughly R$19.3 billion in investment and operational costs, and the concession auction is scheduled for November 2026.
