Mato Grosso do Sul deploys AI platforms to monitor deforestation and wildfires

The Institute of Environment of Mato Grosso do Sul (Imasul) unveiled two new monitoring systems—Mades (Monitor of Deforestation Alerts) and Maques (Monitor of Fire Alerts)—on World Environment Day. The platforms combine geospatial intelligence, high‑resolution satellite imagery and automated data cross‑checking with official registries such as the Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) to speed up detection and response.

According to Imasul director‑president André Borges, the tools reduce manual analysis by about 80 %, delivering deforestation alerts within five days and fire alerts in as little as ten minutes. Over R$ 8 million has been invested since 2023 in the technology, infrastructure and satellite image acquisition. Representatives from the State Fire Brigade and the Environmental Police highlighted the improved coordination and faster operational planning that the systems enable.

The launch aims to strengthen prevention, control and enforcement of illegal logging and forest fires across the state, improving environmental protection and public safety.
