Brazil enacts law establishing Pibid teacher training scholarships
Brazil has officially instituted the Institutional Scholarship Program for Teaching Initiation (Pibid) through Law 15.518/2026. Sanctioned by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, the law establishes permanent regulations for the program, which is managed by the Ministry of Education (MEC) and the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (Capes).
The program aims to strengthen teacher training and value the teaching profession by providing scholarships to undergraduate students in teaching degree programs (licenciatura). These students will engage in practical training activities within public schools, bridging the gap between academic theory and classroom reality. The initiative also supports diverse educational modalities, including rural, indigenous, quilombola, special, bilingual, and adult education (EJA).
There are five scholarship categories: teaching initiation for students, supervision for public school teachers, area coordination, educational process management coordination, and institutional coordination. The total number of scholarships will be determined based on budgetary availability and Capes regulations. The law seeks to improve the quality of initial teacher training and reduce dropout rates in teaching degrees.
