Brazil sanitation entities propose agenda for universalization goals

Sanitation entities in Brazil are proposing a strategic agenda to the next federal government to ensure the universalization of water and sewage services by 2033. This goal, established by the Legal Framework for Sanitation, requires 99% water coverage and 90% sewage treatment. Five major organizations, including Instituto Trata Brasil and ABES, have submitted 15 proposals focused on regulatory security, institutional strengthening of the National Water and Sanitation Agency (ANA), and unlocking credit through mechanisms like FGTS and green financing.

In Rio Grande do Sul, the company Corsan has invested R$ 6 billion over three years to accelerate these targets. This investment has increased sewage coverage in its service areas from 19% to 30% and provided treated water to 186,000 new properties. While these advancements represent significant progress, the state still faces challenges to reach national and international benchmarks.
