Brazil sanitation investments reach record R$ 29.1 billion

Brazil recorded a record investment of approximately R$ 29.1 billion in the basic sanitation sector in 2024. These funds were directed toward the expansion and improvement of water supply and sewage services.

Despite this record, significant challenges remain to meet the goals set by the Legal Framework for Sanitation. To achieve universalization by 2033—which requires 99% access to potable water and 90% sewage collection and treatment—estimates suggest that between R$ 600 billion and R$ 900 billion in additional investment is necessary. Currently, sewage treatment rates remain near 52%, highlighting the gap between current funding levels and the requirements for meeting national targets.
