Brazil sanitation investments reach record R$ 29.1 billion in 2024

Sanitation investments in Brazil reached a record R$ 29.1 billion in 2024, representing a 9% increase compared to 2023, according to the Brazilian Association of Sanitation Companies (Abcon). The Northeast region saw R$ 5 billion in investments, with 705 municipalities—39% of the region—now utilizing private operators following the implementation of the New Sanitation Legal Framework.

While infrastructure access has improved, with water supply reaching 68.3 million households and sewage networks reaching 56.4 million, environmental performance lags. In 2024, only 51.8% of the sewage generated in the country was treated. Abcon emphasizes the need for regulatory stability to meet universalization goals by 2033.
