Brazil infrastructure and sanitation sectors seek increased investment

Brazil is facing significant challenges in infrastructure and sanitation, with experts and officials emphasizing the need for increased investment to meet national goals. The National Confederation of Industry (CNI) reports that the country needs to more than double its annual infrastructure investment from R$ 266.8 billion (2.27% of GDP) to approximately R$ 550 billion (4.65% of GDP) to close the historical deficit.

In the sanitation sector, the BNDES has tripled its approved investments since the 2020 legal framework, increasing annual approvals from R$ 2.5 billion to R$ 7.8 billion. While the legal framework sets a goal for universalization by 2033, current trends suggest the target might not be met until 2070 without accelerated action. Government officials and private sector leaders are advocating for a combination of public and private capital to bridge this gap.

In the corporate sector, Blanver's CYG Biotech received R$ 86 million from BNDES to expand the production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (IFAs) in Indaiatuba, aiming to bolster the supply of medicines for the Unified Health System (SUS). Additionally, Skala Brasil announced a R$ 150 million investment in a new factory in Uberaba to increase production capacity by 60% as part of its international expansion strategy.
