Brazil school transport strikes halt classes for hundreds in Acre and Roraima
In the Amazonian city of Tarauacá, Acre, about 60 barqueiros who provide river transport for the state school system began a strike on Friday after months of unpaid salaries (R$1,800) and boat‑rental fees (R$1,000). They say deductions were made without justification and that some workers have not received any payment for the year. The walk‑out leaves roughly 700 students from river‑front communities unable to reach school.
In the rural district of Vicinal 24, Caracaraí, Roraima, families report that the contracted school‑bus service has been suspended for nearly two weeks because the transport company has not been paid. The interruption prevents children from attending the Municipal School Maria Lunete, adding to lost instructional days and growing parental concern.
Both incidents highlight chronic payment delays by the State Education Secretariat and its contracted providers, threatening access to education for remote Brazilian children.
