Brazil seafood industry targets R$ 15.6 billion in annual exports

The Brazilian Association of Fish Industries (Abipesca) has proposed a strategic plan to significantly boost the country's seafood exports. Under an ambitious scenario, annual exports could reach R$ 15.6 billion within four years, which would represent approximately five times the current level.

To achieve this growth, the plan calls for a massive scale-up involving increased production, industrial modernization, and the opening of new international markets. Key components of the proposal include the creation of a Fisheries and Aquaculture Acceleration Program and the establishment of specific financing lines for exporters. These financial measures suggest up to R$ 104 million in working capital per company and up to R$ 260 million for industrial modernization or expansion.

Abipesca notes that while the sector currently grows at an average of 5.5% annually, improvements in credit access, sanitary standards, traceability, and international promotion could increase that rate to 10%. However, reaching the R$ 15.6 billion target would require an average annual growth rate of nearly 50%, necessitating fleet renewal, new processing plants, and the overcoming of regulatory, logistical, and environmental hurdles.
