Brazil seeks EU election monitoring and cracks down on deepfakes ahead of 2024 vote

Kassio Nunes Marques, president of Brazil's Superior Electoral Court, announced plans to invite the European Union to observe the country's upcoming elections, which include state governor, legislative and presidential contests. The invitation, expected to be sent in the coming days, could bring an EU team of electoral specialists or a larger observation mission to monitor voting procedures and issue recommendations, aiming to “blindar” the process against criticism.

Procurador‑Geral da República Paulo Gonet warned that the 2026 electoral cycle could be threatened by AI‑generated deepfakes and interference from criminal factions. He pledged rapid legal responses, stating, “The Brazilian State cannot coexist with parallel states built by criminal organizations.” Gonet also noted the recent U.S. designation of Brazilian gangs as terrorist groups, underscoring the broader security context surrounding the elections.
