Brazil seeks ASEAN Full Dialogue Partner status during Southeast Asia visit
Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira is conducting an official visit to Southeast Asia to strengthen ties and expand commercial opportunities. A primary objective is negotiating Brazil's elevation from a sectoral dialogue partner to a Full Dialogue Partner of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Brazil currently holds sectoral dialogue status, a position it has maintained since 2022. The government anticipates that full partnership could be granted during the ASEAN summit in the Philippines this November or starting in January 2027 when Singapore assumes the presidency. Achieving this status would deepen relations with a bloc that serves as Brazil's fifth-largest trading partner.
Trade between Brazil and ASEAN nations has seen significant growth, rising from US$ 3 billion in 2003 to US$ 38 billion in 2025. Vieira noted that trade with the bloc is expected to eventually surpass trade with the United States and Europe. This strategic push for diversification comes as Brazil seeks to mitigate the impact of potential tariffs from the Donald Trump administration.
Additional goals of the mission include reopening the Thai market to Brazilian meat, which was closed in 2024, and discussing cooperation in areas such as innovation, environmental issues, and combating organized crime and cyber fraud.
