Brazil seeks to expand natural slate exports to France

A new market study has identified significant growth potential for the Brazilian slate sector in France. Although France is the world’s largest importer of natural slate, accounting for 38% of global imports, Brazil currently holds only a 0.6% share of the French market.

Brazil is the world's third-largest exporter of slate, with the state of Minas Gerais producing 99% of the nation's total. In 2025, Brazil exported over 112,000 metric tons of natural slate, valued at US$ 50.4 million. While the United Kingdom remains the primary destination for Brazilian slate, receiving 48.7% of exports, France represents a major untapped opportunity due to its heavy reliance on foreign supplies for architectural roofing and historic building restorations.

The study was developed by the consultancy Orbiz and presented to companies supported by the Brazilian Natural Stone Association (Centrorochas) and the Brazilian Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil). According to Centrorochas President Tales Machado, entering the French market requires navigating specific technical requirements, certifications, and distribution channels beyond competitive pricing.
