Brazil sees sharp rise in political violence against women
Political violence against women in Brazil has seen a dramatic increase, with the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) reporting that cases rose more than 11 times in four years. In 2022, 15 processes were recorded, whereas by September 2026, the number reached 177. The Federal Public Ministry (MPF) has documented 436 complaints of gender-based political violence since 2018, noting that over half involved moral violence and 40% involved psychological violence.
In response, the TSE and the MPF launched the ‘Política é Substantivo Feminino’ campaign to raise awareness and combat these practices. Additionally, the TSE and the Attorney General's Office (PGE) signed a Joint Action Protocol to prevent and confront such crimes. To address digital threats, the TSE partnered with Google to introduce the Likeness ID tool, designed to identify deepfakes and synthetic media on YouTube that use candidates' identities without authorization.
Separately, the Labor Public Ministry (MPT) reported 463 instances of electoral harassment in the workplace in 2026, involving pressure or intimidation of employees regarding their political views.
