Brazil's regional economic activity shows mixed trends in 2026

Investors in Pernambuco placed R$10.18 billion in equities in the first half of 2026, an 18.9% rise that was the strongest among Northeast states. The same period saw the state's overall economic activity grow 5.1% year‑to‑date, the highest pace in the region, driven by services, a recovering industry and a tight labour market.

In the South, Paraná recorded the fastest growth of large‑scale industries among the Sul, Sudeste and Centro‑Oeste regions, with the number of firms employing 1,000 or more rising 53% to 89 between 2018 and 2025. Those enterprises now employ roughly 203,000 workers and inject about R$756 million per month in wages, while agro‑industries dominate the portfolio.

Retail performance was uneven. São Paulo's retail sales fell 6.9% in April, reflecting higher interest rates and indebted households, whereas the Centro‑Oeste region posted a 2.6% rise in June, the only region with growth that month. Paraná’s overall retail sales grew 1.42% from January to April, led by department stores, while bean exports from the state slumped 65% in the first half of 2026, turning the grain’s trade balance negative.

Salvador’s economic activity index slipped 2.4% in May, dragged down by declines in inter‑municipal bus passenger volumes (‑17.4%) and electricity consumption (‑3.4%). The city’s port cargo handled, however, rose 8.0%, offsetting some of the slowdown.

Nationally, the Central Bank’s IBCR data showed four of Brazil’s five regions posting month‑over‑month growth in May, with the North leading at 1.0% and the Northeast contracting 0.6%. The mixed picture underscores divergent regional dynamics amid Brazil’s broader economic recovery.
