Brazil sees rise in emigration and fiscal residence searches

A growing number of Brazilians are seeking to establish fiscal residence abroad as a long-term strategy to protect assets and diversify investments. Driven by a desire for legal security and economic predictability, many are looking to mitigate risks associated with currency fluctuations and potential changes in tax regulations.

In the first half of 2026, Paraguay granted 22,628 residencies to Brazilian citizens, making it a primary destination for those seeking to maintain operations in Brazil while securing an international alternative.

Beyond financial planning, broader motivations for emigration include professional opportunities, family ties, education, security, and quality of life. A study by the Universidade Federal Fluminense (UFF) involving over 7,000 Brazilians across 21 countries indicates that many emigrants are highly educated individuals in their productive years. While work is the leading driver at 22.4%, other significant factors include family (18%), education (16.8%), and safety (14.9%). Approximately 44.2% of those surveyed intend to remain permanently in their destination countries.
