Brazil sees surge in newborns named Neymar after World Cup 2026 call

Following the announcement of Brazil's squad for the 2026 World Cup on 18 May, five newborns were registered with the name “Neymar” in five different cities – Simoesia, Curitiba, Rio de Janeiro, Praia Grande and Centenario. The registrations represent roughly 20 % of the annual total for that year. By mid‑2026, a total of 25 children have been named Neymar across the country.

Historical data from the São Paulo Civil Registrars Association shows a long‑term decline in the use of the name after previous World Cups: 186 newborns in 2010, 157 in 2014, 672 in 2018 and 40 in 2022. Between 2022 and 2026, 142 children were named Neymar. The recent spike reflects the immediate emotional impact of the star forward’s inclusion in the national team and demonstrates his continued cultural influence in Brazil.
