Brazil Senate advances bill requiring internal trunk opening device in new cars

The Brazilian Senate's Infrastructure Committee approved a bill (PL 1.434/2023) that would mandate new vehicles, whether manufactured domestically or imported, to be equipped with a device that allows the trunk to be opened from the inside. The measure aims to reduce the risk of children becoming trapped or victims being confined in a trunk.

The proposal, authored by Federal Deputy Capitão Alden (PL‑BA), received a favorable opinion from Senator Marcos Pontes, who suggested wording amendments. It now proceeds to the Senate's Constitution and Justice Committee, with implementation details to be set by the National Traffic Council (Contran) if the bill becomes law.
