Brazil Senate approves Federal Sports University to boost sports professions

The Brazilian Senate approved the creation of the Federal Sports University (UFEsporte), a new public institution that will be headquartered in Brasília with plans for campuses in the capitals of the country's five regions. The university, a partnership between the Ministries of Sports and Education, aims to offer undergraduate and graduate programs in sports science, physical education, sports management, medicine, rehabilitation, and nutrition, targeting the training of referees, coaches, managers and other sports professionals. Implementation is slated for 2027, with an initial capacity of up to 3,000 students.

Minister of Sports Paulo Henrique Cordeiro highlighted the university as a key tool for professionalizing Brazilian sport and supporting broader initiatives such as the Arena Brazil infrastructure program, the Bolsa Atleta athlete‑support scheme, and the upcoming 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, which Brazil will host for the first time. The event is expected to raise the profile of women's football and is backed by a new regulatory law signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Together, these measures aim to strengthen sports education, increase inclusion, and drive economic and social benefits across the nation.
