Brazil Senate backs strengthening of Labor Justice in special session

On Monday, a special session of the Brazilian Senate honored labor judges and marked the 50th anniversary of ANAMATRA, the National Association of Magistrates of Labor Justice. Senators Paulo Paim and Laércio Oliveira led the ceremony, urging the reinforcement of the specialized labor courts to protect workers facing gig‑economy jobs, automation and "pejotização" (contracting as legal entities). The senators highlighted ANAMATRA’s role in parliamentary debates, its opposition to the 2017 labor reform that they say weakened rights, and its advocacy for specific social‑security provisions for platform workers. Former TST minister Horácio de Senna Pires warned against liberal reforms that could erode labor protections, while prosecutor Angelo Fabiano Farias da Costa cited challenges such as platformization and artificial‑intelligence‑driven work. TST president Luiz Philippe Vieira de Mello recalled past proposals to abolish the Labor Justice and noted ANAMATRA’s continued defence of its constitutional role as a safeguard for workers' rights and social peace.
