Brazil Senate candidates use Moraes impeachment as electoral platform

Political candidates from the Liberal Party (PL) are increasingly using the impeachment of Supreme Federal Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes as an electoral platform. This strategy aims to secure a Senate majority capable of forcing the removal of STF justices and altering the court's composition.

However, polling data from the Quaest Institute suggests this tactic may have limited appeal among the general electorate. Only one in ten voters considers the impeachment of STF ministers a priority, with most voters prioritizing candidates who can secure regional funding and infrastructure projects.

While the far-right seeks to gain enough seats to initiate impeachment proceedings or constitutional amendments, current projections suggest they may fall short of the necessary supermajorities. To pass an impeachment, two-thirds of the Senate (54 votes) is required, while constitutional amendments require three-fifths (49 votes). Recent polling indicates that while opposition groups may gain influence in Senate commissions, they are unlikely to reach the thresholds needed to fundamentally alter the judiciary or the Constitution.
