Brazil Senate considers elderly status for people with disabilities at age 50

A legislative proposal currently under review in the Brazilian Senate seeks to allow people with disabilities to be recognized as elderly starting at age 50. If approved, this would grant them access to the rights and protections established by the Statute of the Elderly ten years earlier than the current age requirement of 60.

The change would not be automatic. Instead, individuals would undergo mandatory medical, psychological, and social evaluations to determine if they meet the specific criteria. Proponents, including Senator Flávio Arns, argue that certain disabilities can significantly reduce life expectancy compared to the general population.

Senator Paulo Paim has also expressed support, noting that the measure could help mitigate the negative effects of aging on this vulnerable group and promote active aging policies. The bill has already passed the Chamber of Deputies and relevant Senate committees, and it now awaits a vote in the Senate Plenary.
