Lula and Alcolumbre resume dialogue amid Petrobras oil discovery
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Senate President Davi Alcolumbre have re-established political dialogue, marked by a joint visit to a Petrobras drilling vessel off the coast of Amapá. The visit follows Petrobras' announcement of oil and gas discoveries in the Morpho well within the Equatorial Margin, a strategic area for Brazil's future energy reserves.
This rapprochement has unblocked several legislative priorities in the Senate. Key items include a Constitutional Amendment (PEC) regarding the end of the 6x1 work schedule, a PEC on Public Security, and a proposal for a National Policy on Critical and Strategic Minerals.
Regarding the 6x1 work schedule proposal, Senate leaders suggest it could be voted on between the first and second rounds of the upcoming elections. While government allies seek an earlier vote, the National Confederation of Industry (CNI) has criticized the timing, arguing that such significant changes to labor laws should be debated more broadly without electoral pressure.
