Brazil Senate approves end of 6x1 work schedule

The Brazilian Senate has approved Constitutional Amendment 221/2019, effectively ending the 6x1 work schedule. The amendment mandates a maximum 40-hour work week, reduced from 44 hours, and guarantees workers two days of paid weekly rest, with one day preferably falling on a Sunday, without salary reduction.

The transition will occur in phases: the two-day rest requirement and a 42-hour weekly limit are set to take effect in December 2026, while the 40-hour weekly limit will be implemented in December 2027. The federal government plans to publish a decree to regulate these changes, providing a guide for companies and workers to negotiate adjustments, particularly for sectors operating 24 hours a day.

While the change aims to improve worker well-being and mental health, it has raised concerns regarding economic impacts. Some sectors, such as retail and services, face challenges in reorganizing shifts to maintain service. Additionally, analysts suggest the shift could increase demand for logistics warehouses by up to 30% as companies potentially accelerate investments in e-commerce to manage labor costs.
