Brazil Senate advances PEC to end 6x1 work scale
The Brazilian Senate is moving toward a vote on a Constitutional Amendment Proposal (PEC) to end the 6x1 work scale, which currently requires employees to work six days for every one day of rest. Senator Omar Aziz, the rapporteur, has indicated he will maintain the text originally approved by the Chamber of Deputies to expedite the process and avoid the need for the proposal to return to the lower house for further review.
The proposed amendment aims to reduce the maximum weekly workload from 44 to 40 hours, distributed over five days, without reducing worker salaries. The transition would be gradual, with the workload dropping to 42 hours two months after promulgation and reaching 40 hours after one year.
