Brazil Senate upgrades electronic voting system with new touch‑screen panels

In early 2026 the Federal Senate of Brazil modernised its electronic voting system, installing a new touch‑screen panel in the plenary chamber. The upgrade provides real‑time vote displays, additional voting stations with biometric fingerprint authentication and multiple security layers, including credential checks, encryption and infrastructure protection. Senate officials said the design respects the historic architecture while enhancing accuracy and secrecy of votes.

Brazil’s separate electronic voting machines for public elections also operate without internet connections, storing votes in encrypted files and producing a printed “boletim de urna” that can be audited by parties, the Public Ministry and other authorised observers. The machines are sealed with physical and digital locks, use biometric verification of voters, and separate voter identity from the vote content, ensuring secrecy and enabling independent verification of results.

Both systems aim to increase transparency, security and public confidence in Brazil’s democratic processes through technological safeguards and auditability.
