Brazil Senate’s new government leader Teresa Leitão reopens talks with President Davi Alcolumbre

Senator Teresa Leitão (PT‑PE) was appointed the government's leader in Brazil’s Senate, succeeding Jaques Wagner. Within her first week she held at least two meetings with Senate President Davi Alcolumbre (União Brasil‑AP) as part of an effort to restore strained ties between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s administration and the upper house.

Leitão said the dialogue would be handled institutionally and that any direct meeting between Lula and Alcolumbre would be a personal decision of the two leaders. Alcolumbre praised her articulation and described the encounter as “very good.” The renewed contact aims to secure Senate support for priority government proposals, notably the PEC that would end the 6×1 work‑schedule arrangement, though Alcolumbre has not yet signaled a timetable. With the legislative recess set to begin on 18 July, officials expect progress on the agenda after the break, while Camilo Santana is slated to take over the PT Senate leadership.
