Brazil Senator Jaques Wagner Seeks STF Relief Over Bank Master Probe

Federal Police investigations uncovered evidence of alleged cooperation between Senator Jaques Wagner, the government leader in Brazil's Senate, and the owners of Bank Master. Searches of Wagner's properties reportedly found a R$2.5 million apartment in Salvador and a R$3.5 million transfer to a company linked to his son‑in‑law, raising suspicions of illicit benefits.

Wagner's legal team filed an appeal to the Supreme Federal Court, arguing that the operation was authorized on the basis of serious procedural errors and that the senator never used his congressional position to benefit the bank. The defense claims the cash seized at Wagner's residence came from legitimate sources, including official Senate travel allowances.

Amid the fallout, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is expected to recommend Wagner's removal from the Senate leadership, citing concerns that the ongoing probe harms the government's image and political stability during a critical electoral period.
