Brazil senior entrepreneurs triple incomes as formalization rises
Brazil’s population is living longer, with the IBGE reporting a national life expectancy of 76.6 years in 2024 – the highest since records began. Regional gaps persist, as Santa Catarina reached about 81.1 years while Piauí lagged at roughly 72.4 years. In response, Brazil enacted a National Care Policy (Law No 15.069) in December 2024 to coordinate support for people needing care and those providing it.
A Sebrae‑IBGE study of senior entrepreneurship shows that formally registered entrepreneurs aged 60 and over earned an average of R$ 7,458 per month in the fourth quarter of 2025, more than three times the R$ 2,152 earned by informal peers. The cohort grew to about 4.5 million owners, representing 15 % of all business owners, while education levels improved: those with only primary schooling fell from 68 % to 46 %, and those with secondary or higher rose from 24 % to 42 % over 2012‑2025. Despite higher incomes, formalization and pension coverage for senior entrepreneurs advanced only modestly.
The ageing trend is also reshaping Brazil’s real‑estate sector. Senior‑living projects, such as the Ankara Towers in Florianópolis, are expanding to meet demand for accessible, compact housing. Market forecasts anticipate the senior‑living segment surpassing US$ 388 billion globally, underscoring the economic weight of Brazil’s demographic shift.
