Brazil sets corn yield record as sorghum expands in Goiás

The Getap Summer 2026 competition recorded a new Brazilian corn productivity benchmark, with yields surpassing 369 sacks per hectare. The top results came from the southern states, where farms reported 359 sacks per hectare, while the central and northern regions also posted impressive figures above 300 sacks. The achievement highlights ongoing technological and management advances in the country’s corn sector.

At the same time, sorghum is rapidly gaining importance in the state of Goiás. Plantings are projected at 631,100 hectares for the 2025/2026 season, a near‑60 % rise in area and a 40 % increase in output, reaching about 2.2 million tonnes. Goiás now produces 29.3 % of Brazil’s total sorghum, maintaining its lead for eight consecutive years. Farmers cite lower seed costs, greater drought tolerance, expanding ethanol plants and cattle‑feeding demand as drivers of the shift, with sorghum now viewed as a strategic second‑season crop rather than a fallback.

Both developments underline a broader transformation in Brazilian grain agriculture, driven by higher yields, cost efficiency and diversification of crop choices.
