Brazil sets green electricity tariff flag for October

Brazil's National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) has set the electricity tariff flag to green for October. This marks a shift from the yellow flag that had been in effect for five consecutive months since May.

The change follows increased rainfall in the South and Southeast regions, which has helped stabilize hydroelectric reservoir levels. Improved generation conditions reduce the need to activate more expensive thermoelectric power plants. Under the green flag, consumers will not face the additional charges associated with the yellow or red flag systems.

However, authorities and utility companies like Cemig emphasize that the green flag does not represent a reduction in the base electricity tariff, but rather the absence of a variable surcharge. Consumers are encouraged to maintain conscious consumption habits, such as managing high-power appliances like electric showers and using LED lighting, to keep overall costs under control.
