Brazil showcases international dance festival and trans‑focused theatre in August

From 4 to 11 August, the 24th edition of Dança em Trânsito took place in Rio de Janeiro, offering free and low‑price performances by 20 Brazilian dance companies across venues such as Espaço Tápias, Teatro Nelson Rodrigues, Teatro Carlos Gomes and Praça Mauá. The festival hosted ten international programmers, curators and directors from France, Spain, Italy, Slovenia, Bulgaria, Luxembourg, South Korea and Uruguay, and featured invited companies from Italy, France, South Korea and Luxembourg, as well as residencies and the “Janelas para o mundo” meetings with South‑Korean and Luxembourg representatives. The event is supported by the Ministry of Culture, Volkswagen Trucks & Buses and Engie Brazil.

In Manaus, the theatrical‑performative work Travessias premiered at Teatro Gebes Medeiros on 25 and 28 July and on 5 August, presenting a bilingual (Portuguese‑Libras) exploration of the physical, symbolic and affective migrations of trans and gender‑non‑conforming bodies. The production combines theatre, performance, video and sign language, highlighting the political dimensions of gender identity and community through interactive scenes and audience participation.
