Brazil Ministry of Transport and BNDES sign highway concession contract

The Brazilian Ministry of Transport and the BNDES have signed a contract to structure the private concession of 3,137 kilometers of federal highways across nine states in the North and Northeast regions. The project aims to facilitate the transfer of highway operations to the private sector and is expected to be completed by the end of 2030.

The selected highway stretches include BR-153 (775 km), BR-010 (678 km), BR-226 (717 km), BR-116 (473 km), and BR-104 (494 km). BNDES President Aloizio Mercadante noted that the selection prioritizes regions with expanding agricultural production that currently face infrastructure investment deficits.

Transport Minister George Santoro stated that the structuring process will incorporate measures to reduce toll costs, implement 5G internet connectivity, and promote sustainability through energy transition and climate resilience. Additionally, the government has launched a National Highway Connectivity Policy, which includes a mandatory roaming regime for telecommunications operators to expand mobile coverage on federal and state roads by 2027.
